(1907 - 2002)
Founder & Attorney at Law
Our Founder
The late Mr. L.S. Davar, our esteemed founder, stands as an indisputable luminary in the realm of intellectual property (IP) law. A visionary of unparalleled foresight, he presciently recognized the imperative for a robust IP framework in India decades before its widespread recognition. Following his legal studies, Mr Davar embarked on his career at the Indian Patent Office in the late 1920s, during the era of British governance. His tenure there ignited a profound conviction: the fruits of innovation should be readily accessible to Indian innovators across the nation. This conviction culminated in the establishment of the first truly indigenous Indian IP law firm in 1932, a testament to his unwavering commitment.
Mr Davar's prominence within the Indian IP community led to his appointment as a member of the joint committee tasked with presenting a report on the Patent Bill of 1965 to the Parliament of India. The recommendations put forth by this committee were instrumental in the enactment of the Patent Act of 1970, a legislative cornerstone that continues to underpin the balanced patent regime currently in force in India.
For over nine decades, Mr L.S. Davar's visionary leadership has indelibly shaped generations of aspiring IP professionals. His influence has fostered an environment conducive to self-discovery through a diverse array of impactful initiatives. Mr Davar's ethos transcended personal ambition, encompassing a profound dedication to the broader needs of humanity. He fervently espoused the principle that while external forces may falter, unwavering self-reliance remains the ultimate wellspring of resilience: “People will quit on you. You have to make sure every single day that you do not quit on yourself.” This maxim encapsulates the spirit of perseverance and dedication that defined his illustrious career and continues to inspire our firm.
